I happen to be driving home today after a nice day with my grandmother. ( I take her shopping every week and then we go out to lunch ) and on my way home I was thinking about a call I had where we had to ask family members if they had an DNR or a DNI on the patient. ( DNR - Do Not Resuscitate, DNI - Do Not Intubate) They stated that they ma,y but could not locate it. This meant that as an EMS provider we had no choice but to just assume this patient wants all medical measures to keep her/him alive.Unfortunate if the patients wishes was NOT to have any sort of measure's taken to keep them alive, then there wishes have not been filled. We can not take word from a family member or friend that this patient did have a DNR or DNI for a few reason and one main reason is, we do not know what the situation is between you and that patient. What if you and the patient had some personal issues going on where you wanted this patient to not live ( God for bid, but there are people out there that think this way ) any longer they will tell EMS anything to avoid life saving measures, and it's truly sad :(
And so what I am suggesting is that if you do have a loved on or even your self that has a DNR or DNI to make it handy if something was to happen to you or that loved one where it's either life or death when it comes to having to call EMS. If you do not have it, EMS and hospitals have to go with taking all measure to saving their or your life !
TAKE TIME AND PREPARE PLEASE !
